NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL ATTENDS NATIONAL BLACK MBA CONFERENCE; ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RECRUIT THOUSANDS

National initiative to recruit over 2,300 financial representatives

Milwaukee, WI (BlackNews.com) — Officials from Northwestern Mutual, a leading financial services company, are traveling to Los Angeles as part of a national initiative to recruit more than 2,300 financial representatives across the country in 2010 to help the company meet surging demand among Americans for financial guidance. Northwestern Mutual executives and leading financial representatives from the Los Angeles area will showcase available career opportunities to attendees of the 32nd Annual National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Conference in Los Angeles held September 21-25.

Ranked No. 23 by American College and Howard University in its 2010 listing of the 100 best employers for 2010 graduates in Black Collegian magazine, Northwestern Mutual will share both company and career information with tomorrow’s business leaders at the conference.

The slow U.S. job market is making it tough for many to find jobs, especially African-Americans. However, the low employment rate is inciting new interest in entrepreneurship, especially among African-Americans who are 50 percent more likely to start a business than whites*. In fact, entrepreneurship is one of America’s fastest-growing career sectors**.

“One of the hottest job prospects in today’s economy – especially for African-Americans – is entrepreneurship in financial services, because you can be your own boss while making a major impact on people’s lives,” said Greg Jones, Northwestern Mutual vice president of diversity and inclusion. “Like never before, this challenging economy has opened people’s eyes to the advantages of being an entrepreneur instead of an employee. Career seekers who wondered, ‘where are the jobs?’ are finding that they can create their own careers.”

Unlike other careers impacted by the downturn in the economy, financial professionals are in high-demand. Even as the overall economy continues to shed jobs, Northwestern Mutual network offices have been recruiting and training thousands of new financial representatives.

“The economic downturn has helped consumers realize the value of financial security, and now, professionals affiliated with a strong company are desired more than ever,” said Kimberley Goode, Northwestern Mutual vice president of communications and corporate affairs and NBMBAA Conference presenter. “In Los Angeles and around the country, families are facing enormous challenges and they’re looking for guidance. Financial professionals who can help people develop long-term strategies have never been more valuable.”

The NBMBAA conference attracts more than 12,000 professionals, offering a wide variety of seminars and networking events to enrich the African-American MBA graduate community. At Northwestern Mutual’s exhibit in booth 2113, candidates are invited to participate in a 3D experience to learn about company opportunities and win prizes. The NBMBAA conference is one of five events the company will exhibit at in 2010, including the National Association of Women MBA and the National Society of Hispanic MBA.

The company will be providing live updates from the exhibit hall throughout the show, which can be accessed through the company’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/northwesternmutual) and Twitter (Twitter Handle: @NM_News) pages.

Northwestern Mutual’s financial representative career was featured by Bloomberg BusinessWeek magazine as a “Best Place to Launch a Career” (9/2009). To learn more about Northwestern Mutual careers, visit: www.northwesternmutual.com/career-opportunities.
