New book chronicles the history of African American professional wrestlers
Columbia, SC (BlackNews.com) — Ten years after its original publication, author Julian L.D. Shabazz returns with an update of his landmark classic Black Stars of Professional Wrestling (Second Edition).
Initially published in 1999, Black Stars of Professional Wrestling was one of the first books that started the trend in books written by or about pro wrestlers. It was also the long-awaited story of the contributions of the Black athletes that have participated in one of America’s most popular sporting events. This second edition is a revised and updated version of the popular original which remains the only publication on the subject. It contains nearly 200 photographs and biographies of Black pro wrestlers from the late 19th Century to today.
The book features African American professional wrestlers who have competed for all of the major North American wrestling companies including World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Total Nonstop Wrestling (TNA).
Little known facts and rarely seen pictures tell the story of some of the most gifted but largely overlooked athletes of all time. Readers will learn about legends like Reggie Siki, Woody Strode, Luther Lindsay, Tiger Conway, Thunderbolt Patterson, Bobo Brazil, and Bearcat Wright, the first Black holder of a version of the world title. They’ll even read about the stars of today like Booker T, The Rock, Shelton Benjamin, Bobby Lashley, Kofi Kingston, and R-Truth. Also covered in the book are Black females, midgets, and celebrity wrestlers from other sports throughout various decades. With Black Stars of Professional Wrestling (Second Edition), the long forgotten warriors are finally given their place of honor in sports history.
