“Let’s ring in the New Year responsibly,” White said. “Please don’t drink and drive and remember to buckle your safety belt — it’s your best defense against a drunk driver. If your celebrations for 2011 include drinking, designate a sober driver or use public transportation.”
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT):
- In 2009 during the New Year’s holiday, there were six crash fatalities, three of which were alcohol-related (50%).
- During the same time in 2008, there were 10 crash fatalities, three of which were alcohol-related (30%).
