ICIRR blasts Kinzinger for proposal to defund Federal Challenge to SB1070
(From the ICIRR)
Â
The US House of Representatives is currently considering HR 1, the continuing resolution to fund the federal government through September 30. Newly elected Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger from Illinois’ 11th District has proposed an amendment (HA 445) stripping funding from the US Department of Justice’s challenge to Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070. The following is the statement of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) regarding Kinzinger’s amendment. Â
The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) is deeply disappointed that Rep. Kinzinger has chosen, as one of the first pieces of legislation he is sponsoring, to defund the federal lawsuit challenging SB 1070. Kinzinger is in effect standing with the state of Arizona as it thwarts federal immigration policy and targets its Latino population. Kinzinger should note in particular that the heart of his district, Joliet, has grown to our state’s fourth largest city in large part due to new Latino residents, and that cities like Kankakee and Bloomington have also witnessed growing Latino settlement. ICIRR hopes that Kinzinger will shift toward supporting policies that welcome Latino and other immigrants and value their contributions to the community, as well as real solutions to our broken immigration system.Â
