Chicago, IL – Goodman Theatre’s Education and Community Engagement Programming announces a season-long partnership with Columbia College Chicago in honor of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s 150th birthday.

The First-Class Passenger: Celebrating 150 Years of Anton Chekhov series—a reference to a Chekhovian short story on the nature of fame and celebrity—includes readings, panel discussions and dramatizations of Chekhov’s short stories. The series kicks off with Transforming Classics: Chekhov in the 21st Century on Monday, November 8 from 6:30 – 8pm in the Goodman’s Owen Theatre. Tickets are free, but reservations are recommended; call Goodman Theatre’s box office at 312.443.3800. Additional programming for this season-long celebration will be announced at a later date.

In Transforming Classics, Artistic Director Robert Falls, playwright of the Goodman’s upcoming El Nogalar Tanya Saracho and Chair Emeritus of Columbia College Chicago’s Theater Department Sheldon Patinkin explore the enduring legacy of this great Russian writer, his intercultural appeal for a new generation of writers and his continuing relevance to contemporary audiences. The discussion is moderated by Goodman Literary Associate Neena Arndt.

Transforming Classics is a free event, presented as part of the Goodman’s CONTEXT series and in conjunction with Robert Falls’ new adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull, recently extended through November 21. The CONTEXT series uses themes from Goodman productions to engage the community—both at the theater and at venues across the city—in conversations that explore particular issues raised within the plays and how they resonate in today’s culture.

Goodman Theatre’s Education & Community Engagement department offers many opportunities for learners of all ages to engage in deeper explorations of topics within and outside the Goodman’s season. Programs offered entirely free of charge include the Student Subscription Series for Chicago public high schools, the General Theater Studies summer program, the Cindy Bandle Young Critics theatre criticism program for young women, CONTEXT: Discourse and Discussion community forums and a theater-wide Internship Program.
