Dr. Bernice A. King culminates 100 Days of Nonviolence and celebrates Coretta Scott King’s 84th Birthday

 

 

Atlanta, GA – Today, Wednesday, April 27th at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA), Dr. Bernice A. King continues her parent’s legacy of nonviolence as she and over 600 students celebrate the success of the Be A Kingâ„¢ 100 Days of Nonviolence program. This program enlisted CSKYWLA’s middle and high school students to proactively address issues and concerns in their community through nonviolent means. The students will assemble at 1190 Northwest Drive Atlanta, GA 30318 for the celebration.

 

Dr. Bernice A. King initiated this program in order to connect the next generation with her father’s legacy of nonviolence (Kingian Nonviolence). Dr. King states “Recent incidents around the world, from Arizona to Egypt are an indication of the significant need for peace and justice to prevail by nonviolent means. I am proud that my little CSKYWLA sisters accepted my challenge to begin to combat violent acts such as bullying, fighting and negative attitudes by committing to use their minds and tongues in a manner that is positive and uplifting. They ran into challenges along the way, but watching and hearing the stories of the girls engaging and working through the challenges has been delightful. Through what they have experienced over the past 100 days, it is my hope that they will continue to embrace nonviolence as a way of life.”

 

The Key learning experiences from the program included:

1.                  Teaching Kingian nonviolent philosophy and method

2.                  Students journaling their daily triumphs

3.                  Children reporting their milestones as an over all group

 

Dr. King began the 100 days on January 18, 2011 during the King Holiday week.  The program ends on April 27th, in honor of Mrs. Coretta Scott King’s 84th birthday. The celebration will recognize the accomplishments of the students and will also mark the roll out of the global program which will engage schools across the nation, beginning with those named after her father.

 

About Bernice A. King

Bernice Albertine King is a globally known preacher, motivational speaker, and activist. She is a graduate of Spelman College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, and a Masters of Divinity, and Doctorate of Law degree from Emory University. She also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Wesley College. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Georgia. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc., the organization founded by Mrs. Coretta Scott King as the living memorial to Dr. King’s legacy. She also serves on Regions Financial Corporation’s Diversity Advisory Council. King is an Elder at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Lithonia,
