Community Poetry Slam offers hundreds of youth a voice, microphone

Nearly 500 West Side public school students will take the stage at America SCORES Chicago’s annual Community Poetry Slam

 

 Chicago, IL – Today ( November 19), Pope Elementary School will host America SCORES Chicago’s seventh annual Community Poetry Slam from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., showcasing original works and performances by nearly 500 public school children from nine different schools on Chicago’s west side.

 The students — 3rd through 8th grade participants in the America SCORES Chicago after-school program — will perform in teams or as individuals for an auditorium filled with peers, parents, teachers, and community supporters.

America SCORES Chicago is the city’s only non-profit after school organization that combines soccer and poetry to inspire urban public school students. A team of guest judges will select top teams and individuals to perform at the Chicago’s Red Carpet Poetry SLAM on January 27th, 2011. Two fifth grade participants will earn the top honor of traveling to New York City to perform in America SCORES’ National Poetry.

Pope Elementary School is located at 1852 South Albany Avenue. The America SCORES Community Poetry Slam is free and open to the public and press.
