Chicago, IL —Muslims from the greater Chicago area will gather at Daley Plaza today, April 29th, 2011, at 1:30 PM to demand the immediate cessation of human rights violations and government oppression in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  The program will begin with prayers at 1:30 to 2:30 PM, followed by a march and rally.

Muslim dissenters say the  people of Bahrain have been subject to atrocities, crimes and countless human rights abuses for exercising their legitimate right to peacefully protest. Muslims are calling for an end to the intimidation, torture and killing of peaceful protestors, human rights activists, and healthcare and medical personnel in Bahrain, at the hands of the Bahraini military and the security forces provided by other states of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

In a press release it stated: “As Americans and Muslims, we expect our government to make clear to its allies that democracy and the civil rights of their citizens must be upheld. We believe that the true and long-term interests of the United States are served by siding with the people rather than with the Bahraini government; and the policy of supporting or compromising with dictators and totalitarian governments weakens American credibility and damages our interests.

“In the current climate of protests across the Middle East and North Africa, we see no reason to discriminate between peaceful demonstrators: Protestors in Bahrain must be extended the same human rights and freedoms as protestors in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, or Yemen. The United States must condemn the use of violence against unarmed demonstrators and make clear that such actions will have direct and serious repercussions on United States policy in terms of diplomacy, military cooperation and trade.

“Muslims from across the US-Midwest will stand in solidarity with the embattled population in Bahrain and extend the invitation for all people of conscience to protest government oppression and the tolerance of it.”

The demonstration will be held on Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 1:30 PM at the Daley Plaza, 50 West Washington Street, in downtown Chicago.
