Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy By Robert T. Carter

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) – In the age of the Trump Effect, an increase in police brutality cases, workplace discrimination and racial profiling, the long term effects of this “new normal” can have a profound impact on the social and psychological health of the community. In response to the changing cultural landscape, Robert T. Carter and Associates (RTCA), a forensic and organizational consulting group of licensed psychologist and professors, offers training services to corporations, non-profits, human resource departments and community organizations providing strategies for preventive solutions and care of race based trauma.

RTCA has worked on a range of issues related to racial discrimination; hostile work environment and racial harassment, specializing in race based traumatic stress. Founder and Principal of RTCA, Robert T. Carter, Ph.D. is a professor, author and expert on race related issues. A professor of Psychology and Education in the Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology at Teachers College at Columbia University, Carter has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters as well as authoring and editing seven books – including The Influence of Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy Toward a Racially Inclusive Model. Dr. Carter’s framework defines race based traumatic stress as an emotional/psychological response to racial experiences that results in functional impairments, making activities of daily living difficult.

This framework has laid the groundwork for RTCA to serve as an expert witness in race-related cases, lending his expertise in the area of stressful and traumatic effects of racial discrimination. He has served as an expert witness on more than fifty federal discrimination, harassment and racial profiling cases, presenting evidence of the impact of race based experiences on current and future experiences. Carter states, “Our work as expert witnesses, have involved the modification of school systems’ racial desegregation plans, biracial custody, racial discrimination and racial harassment in schools, the workplace and as consumer racial profiling.”
