Fioretti Condemns GOP Plan to Bankrupt Chicago Schools

Fioretti condemns forced CPS bankruptcy

The plan by Gov. Bruce Rauner and other members of the Illinois GOP to bankrupt Chicago schools would be a disaster for our children, our teachers and our city, State Senate candidate Bob Fioretti said in the wake of the proposal.

“Governor Rauner’s proposal for a state takeover of Chicago Public Schools will destroy educational opportunity for our children,” said Fioretti, a long-time public education advocate. “And his plan to have CPS file for bankruptcy is nothing more than a back-door attempt to destroy the Chicago Teacher’s Union.

“We don’t need a state takeover. We need our fair share of state funding and we need an elected school board in the city of Chicago,” he said.

CPS and the families who depend on neighborhood schools should not be political bargaining chips with the education of an entire generation put at risk with the GOP plan to intentionally bankrupt the system.

“I’d like to see Gov. Rauner come to Chicago and sit down with the parents of a CPS student and justify putting their kids at risk so he can win a political battle,’’ Fioretti said. “I’d like to see him talk to each of these children and tell them a partisan battle with our city and his anti-union philosophy is more important than their shot at a good education, a good job, and a bright future.’’

Just last week General Electric Corp. announced it ruled Chicago out as a location for its headquarters because of the state of our public schools, Fioretti noted. Our schools are becoming a national tragedy and this is a perfect example as to why.

The proposal is another attack on the Chicago Teacher’s Union, an organization Fioretti has strongly supported. The CTU gave significant concessions four years ago when it agreed to longer hours, it lost thousands of members when 49 Chicago schools, almost all in minority neighborhoods, were closed, and Chicago teachers already contribute more to their own pensions that teachers anywhere else in the state.

Fioretti was a regular figure at school closure hearings where he spoke on behalf of teachers and families. As Second Ward Alderman in 2013 Fioretti introduced a proposed ordinance to declare a surplus from the city’s Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Districts and use much of it toward CPS debt of $1 billion at the time.

Fioretti is a candiate for State Senator from the IL 5th District in the March 15 primary.

“It’s a clear attack on our teachers, all of our public employees, and working class black and hispanic people in our city,’’ Fioretti said. “The people behind any effort to bankrupt our schools rather than to support to fixing them with a better investment simply are willing to hurt children and families to get their way.’’
