Group highlights Vice President’s longtime support on issue

Draft Biden 2016, a group formed to encourage Vice President Joe Biden to enter the 2016 presidential race, applauds the U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down same-sex marriage bans nationwide.

“The favorable ruling on same-sex marriage may be remembered as one of the more defining civil rights cases in the supreme court’s history and we are proud that the person we are trying to draft for the presidency, Joe Biden, was one of the highest ranking American official’s to have first endorsed same-sex marriage,” said Draft Biden 2016 Executive Director William Pierce.

In a 2012 interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Vice President Biden had said, “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that.”

The Vice President came out ahead of even the President to support same-sex marriage in 2012 and more recently this year noted at the Gill Foundation’s OutGiving conference in May, taking a shot at the current Republican field that “eleven years ago, discrimination against same-sex couples was considered really good politics,” reminding the audience that in 2004, the same year President George W. Bush was re-elected, eleven state ballot initiatives banning same-sex marriage passed.

Vice President Biden further pointed out that 2016 Republican presidential candidates are behaving differently on the issue now. “Think of the silence that’s going on among some of our — the candidates running for President,” Biden said. “I never thought I’d say silence is an improvement, but that’s a great improvement from that team.”

“Obamacare yesterday, same sex marriage today. The Obama-Biden Administration has won nearly every major battle in Congress and, when challenged in the Court’s, we are again reminded of the crucial role Vice President Joe Biden played on the frontlines of each one,” Pierce, Executive Director of Draft Biden 2016, further added.”Yet so much left to be done on climate change, infrastructure, gun safety, immigration reform, education, and more. Vice President Joe Biden has the scars to prove that he is the best candidate to best carry our nation forward.”
