Long-Time Humboldt Park Residents to Protest Mass Eviction
Tenants at 1627 N Humboldt Park Blvd are facing homelessness thanks to Jill B. Sickle of Hanover Hamilton Investments LLC, who has bought the building they live in, doubled rents, and served them all with mass eviction notices.
According to one tenant, “We’ve been looking almost every day and we have not been able to find anything in Humboldt Park. It’s unfair, we’ve paid our rent for years and now we just get kicked to the curb. The landlord should at least help us a little with our transition. Why can’t the landlord give us money so that we can pay deposit and first month’s rent? Instead the landlord just evicts us.”
To make matters worse, the landlord has been doing major rehab work while the tenants live in the units. Yesterday they removed a set of stairs and made all the tenants use the back entrance. The tenants have had to with live dust, constant interruptions and worse, bed bugs.
The situation is dire for the mostly elderly and disabled residents living on fixed incomes. They’ve lived in Humboldt Park for 30 years but are struggling to find new homes in the area, or anywhere else, with such little time and money. This protest is to support them and also highlight the crisis’ gentrification is creating in neighborhoods across Chicago.
