In an effort to de-mystify the Obamacare program, AldermanLatasha R. Thomas (17th) in conjunction with Saint Sabina is holding a free informational workshop, Saturday, November 2, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Saint Sabina Church, 1210 W. 78th Place.

According to Keevin Woods, chief of staff, Alderman Thomas’ chief of staff, the purpose of the workshop, which will be held in the McMahon Hall, is “to inform the public about the Obamacare program and how it works and the impact it has on them.

“We want people to learn what the new Illinois health insurance market can do and to earn about new coverage options and who qualifies,” explained Woods. He said there will be navigators present to help people walk through the website and to answer any questions.

Phil Hunter, director of Saint Sabina’s Community Employment, said the purpose is to “get the information out about the Act and the upcoming deadline for enrollment which is March 31, 2014. “We are more concerned that it is mandated by law to have coverage” and helping people “navigate the markets. This is a free informational workshop,” Hunter said.

Alderman Thomas’ workshop comes at a time when President Barack Obama’s Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is on the hot seat with congress after testifying before a House and Commerce Committee.

With negative headlines about the inoperability of the website, HealthCare.gov, and constant bashing by Republicans who want the program scrapped, Sebelius testified that she told the President the site was ready based on staff’s assertions, according to a recent CNN report. President Obama has vowed to fix the site “ASAP.”

Alderman Thomas’ free workshop will help some people understand how to matriculate through the website so they can secure affordable health care before the March deadline.
