Hundreds of family members and loved ones of murder victims in Cook County gathered recently for a special memorial ceremony that was hosted by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

During the ceremony, State’s Attorney Alvarez addressed the audience, reminding them, “you are not alone,” and that “each and every life has a value beyond all measure and the pain of just one violent death is too much to bear.” The ceremony also included a photo montage of victims, personal reflections of remembrance from several family members of victims, and ended with a lighting of candles in memory of loved ones. More than 100 photo boards prepared by the families of homicide victims were also on display during the event.

After the ceremony a resource fair with support groups and referral services was available for attendees.

The event was coordinated by the State’s Attorney’s Victim Witness Assistance Unit, one of the largest prosecutor-based victim advocacy programs in the nation. It was held on Sept. 28th at the UIC Forum in Chicago.
