Dozens of Rogers Park tenants will gather Monday morning, February 18th,Â to stand up to the developer who they say is trying to evict them. With their supporters, they will ask for a meeting with the building’s new owners in an attempt to stop the mass evictions and rent increases that are putting many low-income and disabled tenants at risk of homelessness.
Tenants from the Astor House building at 1246 W. Pratt and supporters from Northside Action for Justice, Metropolitan Tenants Organization and Communities United Against Foreclosure and Eviction will hold a Rally and press conference at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 18,Â in front of 1246 W. Pratt
According to the two groups, since 1246 Pratt LLC bought the building last fall, building management has filed at least 27 eviction cases and forced at least a third of the building’s residents to leave. The few tenants whoÂ are getting the option to renew their leases face rent increases of up to 57 percent. The building is plagued by inadequate security, a lack of smoke detectors, problems with essential utilities andÂ frequent elevator outages that make it impossible for tenants with limited mobility to leave their apartments.
