Mandatory testing of Rape Kits now law

A message from Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan

Today (July 6), Illinois became the first state in the nation to require that every rape kit collected from a victim of sexual assault be submitted for DNA testing.

Last year, I learned that thousands of unprocessed rape kits were sitting in police stations across the state. The justice system’s failure to process evidence collected from sexual assault victims sends a horrible message to the survivors of these devastating crimes.  We will never know the number of sexual predators who got away with these heinous crimes or how many assaults could have been prevented if every rape kit had been tested promptly and followed up on by law enforcement.

I am proud to have worked with Senator Toi Hutchinson and Representative Emily McAsey to pass these new protections for the children and women of Illinois.
